Afm Haque: Iron deficiency and oxidative injuries induced by Cd toxicity in Sugar Beet

Cadmium (Cd) toxicity is a form of soil contamination that causes losses in plant growth and yield. It reduces morphological parameters and affects leaf photosynthesis and genes related to iron (Fe) uptake. Upregulated genes suggest involvement in Cd uptake. Growth retardation in Cd-exposed sugar beets is due to low Fe levels and oxidative stress.

Laura Urban: Developing the Methodology for a Pollinator Conservation Corridor in New England

Pollinator decline due to habitat loss, widespread pesticide use, and diseases constitutes a serious environmental concern, as approximately 75% of the world’s primary crops depend on insect pollination. If pollinator decline advances unchecked, the implications will be severe. Continuous roadsides may function as ecological corridors, providing foraging and breeding habitats, but research on how to develop a pollinator corridor is lacking. Creating a GIS-based model for the establishment of a New England Pollinator Conservation Corridor will connect pollinator habitats in the Northeast. Using I-91 as the study area along with a half-mile buffer zone, our approach includes mapping current and potential habitats, engaging in public outreach, and partnering with local stakeholders to establish and manage these vital ecological paths. This effort will offer a replicable framework for pollinator conservation that can be applied to other regions, thus contributing to the sustainability of both our environment and agriculture.
